Empowering Women to Prepare for Life's Obstacles.

All the Feels

I was gifted with an advanced copy of the audiobook Soul Food Sunday By Winsome Bingham, Sullivan Jones and Illustrated by C. G. Esperanza thanks to NetGalley!

Soul Food Sunday is a window into the family traditions of gathering together for a meal. In this case, the family gets together on Sunday’s at the Grandmother or Granny’s house. The main character, her grandson, shares the day with the reader, and gives a detailed view of what it’s like to finally be old enough to help with preparing the Sunday meal with his Granny.

Soul Food Sunday feels like joy, and smells like a holiday meal in an African-American household also known as soul food. The grandson shares the main food dishes for a soul food dinner and how he helps with each one. This audiobook brought me back to my own Grandmother’s home. It also reminded me of making macaroni and cheese with my Mother. It was the one thing I distinctly remember being able to help with. I appreciate the author including the cooking that is also done by the male in the family - Roscoe Ray on the grill. I think it’s important to show that cooking isn’t just the Grandmother's role.

This audiobook will introduce you to new dishes or remind you of special family memories. It’s a reminder of why bringing the family together is so important. I loved the music, the background sounds, and even the additional pieces like the author’s/illustrators note and the macaroni & cheese recipe.

I think this is a great book to share with children, and introduce them to a possible new adventure with cooking. This children’s picture book is a debut for author Winsome Bingham and will be published on November 16, 2021.
